Byron Boyd Henley, age 94, resident of Somerville, Tennessee, a World War II Veteran and husband of the late Gladys Black Henley, departed this life late Sunday evening, January 7, 2018 at the National HealthCare Center in Somerville.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Henley were conducted at 2 P.M. Monday, January 15, 2018 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Dr. Clinton Buck, pastor of the Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Laconia, officiating. Interment followed in the Union Cemetery at Laconia. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Henley was born March 30, 1923 in Laconia, Tennessee. He was a graduate of Fayette County High School and served his country in the Army Air Force. He made the rank of Corporal and served most of his time in France and England. He was in the secret “Pathfinder” group that led the invasions of Normandy, Southern France, North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Germany.
Mr. Henley was employed as an auditor for Western Auto Supply Company for most of his life before his retirement and was married October 30, 1942 to the former Gladys Black. They moved to the Williston and Somerville Communities after his retirement, where they lived for over 30 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and an active member of Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Laconia. Mr. Henley enjoyed golfing, fishing and reading, but received the most pleasure from visiting with his family members and friends.
Mr. Henley is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Ann Henley Kirkpatrick of Somerville, TN, Janice Henley Wiles (Harry) of Somerville, TN; his son, Byron Boyd Henley, Jr. (Sue) of Cherokee Village, AR; his sister, Ethel Robbins of Dyersburg, TN; his brother, Donald Henley (Sandy) of Huntsville, AL; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Black Henley who died January 19, 2012; his parents, Thomas Byron Henley and Nona Elizabeth Boyd Henley; his son-in-law, Bill Kirkpatrick; his sister, Elizabeth Nash; and his brother, Calvin Henley.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Michael Cannon, Dale Gray, Kyle Kirkpatrick, Harry Wiles, Jim Wiles and Joshua Wiles.
