Alan Spoerlein, 75, of Oakland, Tennessee, passed away on January 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of those who cherished him. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend; truly the hero, guide, and safe place for his family and all who knew him.

Born and raised in Des Plaines, Illinois, Al attended trade school, where he became a journeyman in typography, transforming his skill into a lifelong passion and a well-known printing business. His work can be found throughout Chicago and beyond, including signage for the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, numerous universities, and countless local restaurants. His craftsmanship lives on as a quiet but enduring testament to his talent, dedication, and pride in a job well done. He loved all who worked with him and considered them family.

Al proudly served in the Army National Guard, reflecting his strong sense of duty and commitment to serving others.

Known for his infectious laughter and unending humor, he brought joy wherever he went. He had a natural ability to make people laugh, often when they needed it most, and would help a stranger without hesitation. His warmth and humor put everyone at ease.

Above all else, Al loved his family. He shared a deep and enduring love with his wife of 50 years, Fran. Their marriage was the foundation of his life; a partnership built on devotion, laughter, and unwavering support. She was his greatest love, and his family was his greatest pride.

Al enjoyed tinkering and fixing things, always finding clever “MacGyver-style” solutions. He loved boating, golf, cruises, a good suntan, Corvettes and cars, spending time with family and friends, and cheering on the Chicago Bears.

He lived his life with deep faith, integrity, humor, and kindness, showing those around him the importance of hard work, compassion, and connection. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Agnes Spoerlein. He leaves behind his wife, Fran; his daughter, Genevieve Leenan (Robert); and his two grandchildren, Emelia and Gavin, who lovingly knew him as “Pop Pop.” He is also survived by his brother, Walter Spoerlein (Diane), as well as many sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews, all of whom he cherished deeply.

Services will be held at a later date.
