David DeWitt Fortune, a devoted family man, passed away on October 29, 2025, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis at the age of 79. Born on May 23, 1946, David dedicated his life to construction work where he excelled as a jack of all trades. His exceptional skills in woodworking allowed him to repair anything, a testament to his wealth of knowledge and craftsmanship. David’s journey through life was marked by hard work, unwavering dedication to his community, and a deep love for his family and his church.


A proud graduate of Fayette County High School Class of 1966, David carried his quick wit and kind spirit throughout his life. He was always eager to lend a helping hand to others in the community, displaying a generous soul to friends and neighbors alike. His passions included fishing, hunting, and gardening.


David took immense pride in being an active member of Somerville Methodist Church, participating in numerous church events that touched many lives. He was a member of the Stone Soup Sunday School Class and was always eager to help with class projects, including bi-annual fish fry and stew events. He also took the leadership role in preparing breakfast for the men's group, showcasing his love for both faith and fellowship.

David's marriage to Donna McCaskill on January 1, 1996, marked the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Together, they built a loving home that nurtured their family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Fortune of Williston; two sons, Joel (Cindy) Peterson of Heber Springs, AR, and Justin (Shalane) Peterson of Whiteville: five daughters, Tara Polston (Jerry Hewlett) of Rossville, Ronda Hobbs (Chris) of Bartlett, Sasha Peterson (Scott Stroud) of Collierville, and Jennifer and Kelly Fortune of Gallaway; one sister, Vicky Fortune of Moscow; one brother, Ricky Fortune of Moscow; and seven grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Fortune and Geraldine Diffee Fortune; his step-mother, Marie Fortune; and his sister, Frenchie Lusk.


As we remember David DeWitt Fortune, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with laughter, skillful hands, and an overwhelming love for family and community. David will be remembered not only for his impressive skills in construction and woodworking, but also for the warmth and generosity he shared with all who knew him. His spirit and dedication to family, community, and faith will leave an everlasting imprint on the hearts of many.


A visitation for David was on Sunday, November 2, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Services for David followed at 2 Sunday afternoon at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland and Rev. Don VanVoorhis officiated. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in the Williston community.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Jimmy Skelton, Sylvan Meyer, Vernon Dollahite, Jr. Larry Garris, Harold Pattat, Jr. and David Corson. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Spencer, Jimmy Wiles, Charles Sullivan, and Mike Griffin.


The family requests that memorials be directed to the Somerville Methodist Church, 202 South East Street, Somerville, TN 38068 or the Evergreen Cemetery, 6075 Railroad Street, Williston, TN 38076.
