Listen to Obituary

Dennis Ray (Dan) Starrett was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of Arthur and Margorie Starrett. Dan was raised in St. Paul's Catholic Church and educated at St. Paul's Catholic School, graduating from Hillcrest High School, Memphis, TN in 1968. He passed away at his home, Friday, September 5, 2025, at the age of 74.

On August 16, 1970, Dan married the love of his life, Gloria Dale Sides. Together they built a beautiful life, raising their family in Whitehaven, TN until 2003, when they moved to Moscow, TN. This August, they celebrated fifty-five years of marriage.

In addition to his wife, Dan is survived by three children, Katie Laverne Starrett from Olive Branch, MS; Danny Ray Starrett (Angie), from Byhalia, MS; Christopher Lee Starrett from Moscow, TN.

He has SIX grandchildren: Amanda Starrett; Austin Starrett (Micah); Lance Starrett (Shelby); Hailey Fong; Abbie Oliver Kennedy (Anthony); Conner Richardson.

He has NINE Great-Grandchildren: Ayla Gabriella Starrett, Asher S. Starrett; ~ William Baylor Starrett, Billie Thomas Starrett, Zeplyn Graves Starrett; ~ Liam Alexander Starrett, Lucy Mae Starrett, Ledger Ames Starrett; ~ Penelope Jane Kennedy.

Dan has two living siblings, Sister, Bonnie Starrett Reynolds from Memphis, TN; and Brother, Pete Starrett from Whitehaven, TN. He also leaves one niece and two nephews, Shiloh Reynolds, Shannah Reynolds, and Robert Starrett.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Jerry Lee Starrett.

His family brought endless joy to Dan's life. Dan loved all of his and Gloria's nieces and nephews, who have shown much love for both of them over the years.

Over the years, Dan worked as a licensed Locksmith, then served in the United States Army, before choosing a career of over-the-road truck driving. He retired in 2013. Retirement gave him more time to devote to the things he loved most - woodworking and creating many beautiful and lasting keepsakes, which he generously shared with his family and friends. His artistry could be seen in his hand-engraved belt buckles, knives, guns, and other works. He built an extensive knife collection and never lost his lifelong love for motorcycles, which he rode until his health no longer allowed. Dan was a man of unique wisdom, humor, and perspective, and he was never afraid to share his philosophy on life.

Dan was also a proud Veteran. He served two active years in the United States Army, and one year in the Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Spec 5. He faithfully served his country in the Vietnam War.

In keeping his wishes, there will be no funeral, or burial. Mr. Starrett will be cremated and brought home to his family.

The family requests that Memorials in his name be made to:

Suicide Prevention, 1321 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville, TN 37217.

The family is grateful for your prayers, love, and acts of kindness, during this difficult time.
