George Leroy Harris

George Leroy Harris was born April 14, 1954. His parents were James and Yukue Harris who preceded him in death. George married Clara Tapp Harris on August 19, 1979. They have two children Lindsey Chandler (Kevin) and James Harris (Maggie). One grandchild Emilee Chandler and one on the way Cooper James Harris. They all live in Brownsville, TN. Just a few years ago George found out he had another son Edward McIntosh (Jescha) and two grandchildren Tristan and Berlyn who reside in California.

George served in the Navy where he was a Seabee from 1974-1979. When he was honorably discharged he worked at various jobs but began his career working for the State at Wilder YDC where he met Clara. He was a dorm supervisor several years then was promoted to a newly established position as Fire Inspector. He later transferred to the Department of Commerce and Insurance as a Fire Marshal. He worked there for several years then transferred to Arlington Developmental Center to a Fire Inspector position. When they were downsizing ADC he transferred back to WYDC where he retired in 2016 with 40 years of combined military and state service. George also served as a volunteer fire fighter and as Chief of the Williston Fire Department. He loved spending time with his family and friends, going on vacations to all the different locations where Kevin and Lindsey were stationed while Kevin was in the Navy. He loved watching Emilee play in all her sports. George enjoyed all the fellowship with Maggie’s family and getting to eat all the food James would barbecue on weekends. George passed away peacefully at NHC Somerville surrounded by family on May 11, 2026.

A visitation will be from 10-12 noon, Thursday, May 14, 2026 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with a private interment.
