Loyd Taylor Shelton Jr., affectionately known as "Sonny" to his friends and "Pop" to his grandchildren, age 83, of Collierville, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 11:22 AM, surrounded by his loving family, in Collierville, TN.
Sonny was born on February 2, 1943, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to Loyd Taylor Shelton Sr. and Golden Merle Shelton. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps before dedicating much of his life to ministry, serving faithfully as a pastor. His deep and unwavering faith shaped his calling, where he offered guidance, preached with conviction, and extended compassion to those in his care and community.
Sonny had a deep love for horses, an enduring fascination with history—particularly World War II—hours spent immersed in books, and a lifelong love for travel. His thoughtful nature, steady curiosity, insightful conversations, and special sense for giving unique gifts that no one knew they needed until they got them left lasting impressions on family and friends alike.
He shared a devoted, lifelong partnership with his beloved wife, Dianne. Sonny was a loving father to his daughter Angela (and her husband Andy) and son Jeff (and his wife Amanda). He found great delight in his grandchildren, Colson (and his wife Shelby) and Campbell, and his bonus grandchild Jackson, and in his cherished best friend Carl Crawford.
He was predeceased by both of his parents, Loyd Taylor Shelton Sr. and Golden Merle Shelton.
Sonny will be remembered for his warm heart, steadfast commitment to faith and family, and the quiet, genuine way he made others feel seen and valued. His legacy continues through the lives he touched and the love he gave freely.
