Martha Ann Hall

Martha Ann Hall, born Martha Ann James, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 7, 2026, at the age of 93. She was born on October 17, 1932, in rural West Tennessee to L.C. and Ethel James. A few years later, the family welcomed a baby girl, Barbara Sullins. Martha and Barbara remained close throughout their lives, sharing a bond that lasted nearly nine decades until Barbara’s passing just a few years ago.

Born in the midst of the Great Depression, Martha learned early that life’s blessings were not measured by how much you had, but by how much you cherished. A bag of oranges or one small toy could be a treasured Christmas gift. Those humble beginnings helped shape the hardworking, grateful woman she would become.

Martha eventually moved to Memphis, where she married Robert Hall. Together, Martha and Robert built a life centered around a strong work ethic, a love for family, and an unwavering faith in their Savior, Jesus Christ.

After several years of praying for a child, Martha and Robert were blessed with their son, Greg. They would spend the rest of their lives as proud parents, grandparents, and eventually great-grandparents.

Martha leaves behind her son, Greg, and his wife, Kathy, who became Martha’s primary caregiver for the last 19 years of her life. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jordan, 36, whom she helped raise during the busy season of life and her husband Hunter; Denver, 33, her favorite! (just ask her) and his wife Kaitlin; and Cheyanne (27). She was blessed to know and love her great-grandchildren, Sutton, 5; Anna Leigh, 3; River, 1; and Eloise, 1. She was eagerly looking forward to meeting her fifth great-grandchild, Phoenix, who is due in just a couple of weeks. By the way, she affectionately became known as “Mur,” the name given to her by the grandkids!

Martha was a hard worker throughout her life and ultimately built a career at Sears, where she worked for many years as a teletype operator. Before Sears, and before becoming a mother, she worked her way up at Schering-Plough, where she eventually became a Union Representative. But those accomplishments, while meaningful, were simply what Martha did. They were not who she was.

Who Martha was is best defined by her love of family, her church, and most of all, her personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Martha wanted nothing more than for her family and friends to know the same Savior she knew and loved. Her faith was not simply something she believed; it was something she lived. Even during the final days of her life in the hospital, Martha would ask those who came into her room if they knew Jesus. She prayed with many of them, continuing to share her faith and concern for the souls of others until the very end.

Martha's greatest hope was that the people she loved would one day know Jesus as their Savior and that she would spend eternity with them.

She is now home with her Savior, reunited with her beloved husband, Robert; her parents, L.C. and Ethel; the child she lost through miscarriage; her sister Barbara; and the many precious friends and loved ones who went before her.

Martha loved many, and she was loved by many. Her legacy is not simply the years she lived, the work she accomplished, or the family she left behind. Her greatest legacy is the faith she lived out and the countless people she encouraged to know and love Jesus.

She has finished her race. She has kept the faith. And she is finally home.

Services for Ms. Hall will be officiated by her son, Greg Hall, at 3:00 Sunday afternoon August 16, 2026 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Burial will follow at Fayette County Memorial Park on Highway 64 in Somerville. A visitation for Ms. Hall will be from 1:30-3:00 Sunday afternoon at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or Hickory Withe Baptist Church.
