Melba Bobbitt Chambers

April 15, 1925 — September 11, 2007

MELBA BOBBITT CHAMBERS, a resident of Memphis and native Fayette Countian, who was the wife of the late Murry Ray Chambers died at 9:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at her Memphis residence. She was 82 years of age and died following a six-month illness.


Funeral services for Mrs. Chambers were conducted at 2 P.M. Thursday, September 13th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. John Lloyd, Methodist Minister of Munford, TN., officiating. Interment followed in the Macon Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-Main Chapel.


Mrs. Chambers was born April 15, 1925, in Fayette County, the daughter of the late Hickson W. Bobbitt and the late Bessie Sue Bobbitt, early residents of the Macon Community. She was educated in the Fayette County Public School system and was married December 14, 1941 to Murry Ray Chambers, longtime employee of the National Butane Gas Company who died May 22, 2002.


A resident of Memphis for 53 years, Mrs. Chambers was employed by the Loeb's Cleaners and Fashion Curtain Company in Memphis for over 30 years before her retirement. She was a longtime member of Leawood Baptist Church in Memphis and will be remembered for her quiet mannerisms and kindness to others. She enjoyed her family and preparing meals for them on holidays.


Survivors of Mrs. Chambers include her daughter, Melba Sloan (Teddy) of Marion, AR; 2 sisters, Mary Ann Guy of Covington and Earline Black of Memphis; her granddaughter, Sheila Butler (Keith) of Memphis; 4 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.


Those honored to serve as pallbearers included Keith Butler, Melanie Butler, Jacob Butler, Jason Butler, Edward Castor and Billy Peak.
