Mitchell Wayne Spain, age 79, a longtime resident of Somerville, Tennessee, passed away on December 15, 2025. He was born in Jackson, Tennessee, to the late Jessie Mitchell Spain and Josie Arlene Pendergrass Spain.

He graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, Tennessee, in 1964. He continued his education at Freed-Hardeman University and Memphis State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He proudly served his country as a member of the Tennessee Army National Guard.

Mitchell began his professional career as an inventory controller with Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He later entered the insurance field, working as an agent with Bankers Life and Casualty Insurance. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, he went on to establish Spainco Insurance Company, which he operated independently until his retirement in 2022. Mitchell also served as an insurance broker and earned the professional designation of Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF), reflecting his dedication and commitment to his profession.

He was a faithful member of Somerville Church of Christ where he found strength, fellowship, and community throughout his life.

Mitchell is survived by his loving wife, Linda Jane Spain of Somerville, Tennessee; one daughter, Linda “Michelle” Burns (Dale) of Counce, Tennessee; two sons, Gregory Mitchell Spain (Shannon) of Jackson, Tennessee, and Scott Spain (Beverly) of Oakland, Tennessee; three sisters, Belinda Miller (George) of Cane Ridge, TN, Terry Arnold (Richard) of Dickson, Tennessee, and Tina Welch of Knoxville, Tennessee; eight grandchildren, Kaylah Kinney, Kirsten Russell (Ben), Dalton Burns, Maci Spain, Grayson Spain, Meagan Hall (Alex), Rhiannon Gurkin, and Carly Briley (Ryan); and four great-grandchildren, Oliver Hall, Lucas Hall, Brooks Russell, and Josie Russell.

Mitchell was preceded in death by his loving parents, Mitchell and Arlene Spain.

Mitchell enjoyed football, fishing, deer hunting, and music, and he was an avid fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and the Dallas Cowboys. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family. His strong work ethic, integrity, and devotion to those he loved will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Services for Mr. Spain will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning, December 19, 2025, at Peebles West Funeral Chapel in Oakland, with interment to follow in Somerville City Cemetery in Somerville, Tennessee. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday morning at Peebles West Funeral Chapel in Oakland.

Pallbearers will be Dalton Burns, Ryan Briley, Alex Hall, Greg Spain, Scott Spain, and Ben Russell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Grayson Spain, Oliver Hall, Lucas Hall, and Brooks Russell.
