Nell Coleman Owen

NELL COLEMAN OWEN, a resident of the Williston Community and wife of the late Edward A. Owen died Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the residence of her friend and caregiver, Pat Summers, on Evergreen Drive. She was 95 years of age and remained active until her recent illness.


Funeral services for Mrs. Owen were conducted at 10 A.M. Wednesday, September 26th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. John Michael Krech, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Somerville officiating. Interment followed in the Asbury Cemetery on the Somerville LaGrange Road. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-Main Chapel.


Mrs. Owen was a native of Devereux, Georgia. She was born August 11, 1912, the daughter of the late Ira Coleman and Bessie Wheeler Coleman. Mrs. Owen was educated in the Georgia Public School system and continued her education at the Georgia State College for Women. In earlier years, she was employed by the Georgia State Health Department and was married June 5, 1955 to Edward A. Owen, retired Soil Conservation Service employee, farmer and local weekly newspaper columnist who died July 26, 1993.


Mrs. Owen had been a resident of Fayette County since 1955. She served as a school teacher as a young person and was formerly employed by the U.S. Public Health Services, the Memphis Health Department and the Fayette County Library.


A longtime member of the Somerville First Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Owen will be remembered for her love of social activities and participating in community affairs. She and her late husband devoted many hours of service to the local Red Cross Chapter and other charitable organizations. She was an avid reader throughout her life, who also enjoyed crossword puzzles.


Survivors of Mrs. Owen include her sister, Ruth Coleman Williams of Stone Mountain, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews.


Those honored to serve as casketbearers included Herbert Allen, Jr., Harris Armour, Keith Flaniken, Rube Rhea, Jr., Spike Steinert, Chuck Dacus and John David Douglas.
