Sidney Arthur ‘Art’ Cooper, age 85, resident of Oakland, Tennessee, departed this life Wednesday morning, September 24, 2025 at his residence.
Art was born April 4, 1940 in Heber Springs, Arkansas, the son of the late L.V. “Pete” Cooper and Pearl Norton Cooper. He graduated from Frayser High School in 1958 and was married in 1959 to the late Sharon Petty for 56 years. Arthur was a self-employed home builder and developer at Art Cooper Construction, retiring in 2000. He enjoyed motorcycles, boats, and airplanes. Art enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, hunting and fishing, and making memories out on his farm in Hardeman County. There, he spent time raising cattle and building his own airstrip on the farm to fly his personal airplane.
Mr. Cooper is survived by his daughter, Tammy Cooper Petkoff of Oakland, TN; brother, Billy Cooper (Dina) of Michie, TN; two grandchildren, George Anthony “Tony” Petkoff Sr. (Christina Marie Knight Petkoff) of Bartlett, TN and Kyle Cooper Petkoff of Memphis, TN; and two great-grandchildren, Roxanne Elise Knight Petkoff and George Anthony Petkoff Jr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Petty Cooper and daughter, Sherry Gena Cooper.
Funeral Services for Mr. Cooper were held at 1 P.M. Monday, September 29, 2025 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland and Troy Neff, pastor of New Hope Church of the Nazarene in Memphis, Tennessee, officiated. Interment followed in Memphis Memory Gardens Cemetery.
