Jimmie (Norwood) Gibbs

January 19, 1929 — March 12, 2012

Jimmie Lou Norwood Gibbs, resident of the Williston Community and wife of Warren D. Gibbs died Monday afternoon, March 12, 2012 at the Methodist Hospice House in Memphis where she had been a resident for one week. She was 83 years of age and died following  an extended illness of several months.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Gibbs were conducted at 4 P.M. Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Cliff Mansfield, a longtime friend and retired Methodist Minister of Southaven, Mississippi, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. James Graham, pastor of the Williston United Methodist Church. Graveside services were conducted at 4 P.M. Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Lawnwood Memorial Park Cemetery in Covington, Georgia.

Mrs. Gibbs was born January 19, 1929 in Covington, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Virgil Norwood and Gordie Burch Norwood. She received her education in the Porterdale, Georgia Public School System and was married February 14, 1948 to Warren D. Gibbs, retired manager of the Campbell Lumber Company and the Atlantic Ice & Coal Company in Georgia, who survives.

Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs were long-time residents of Covington, Georgia before moving to Fayette County five years ago to be near their daughter and family. She was employed for 60 years as a bookkeeper and sales person for the Hardeman and Beasley Prescription Shops, located in Covington and Conyers, Georgia. Mrs. Gibbs was a long-time Methodist and a devoted member of the Williston United Methodist Church while living in Fayette County.

She will be remembered as a person who enjoyed the friendships of many. She never met a stranger and always had time for others. Her interests included bowling, basketball and being with family and friends. Mrs. Gibbs was an artist and enjoyed cooking and baking for any occasion. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she dedicated her life to those she loved.

In addition to her husband of 64 years, Mrs. Gibbs is survived by her daughter, Dee Gibbs Weedon and husband, Oscar Wayne Weedon of Memphis, two granddaughters, Katelyn Weedon and Emily Weedon both of Memphis, one sister, Margaret Henry and three brothers, Jack Norwood, Joe Norwood and Gene Norwood all of Covington, Georgia.

Pallbearers were family members and friends. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Williston United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 246, Moscow, TN  38057.
