VERNON WESLEY "POP" ROBBINS, resident of the Whiteville Community, United States Veteran and husband of the late "Kate" Robbins, died Monday, November 12, 2007 at his residence in Whiteville. He was 83 years of age and died unexpectedly.


Funeral services for Mr. Robbins were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, November 14th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Claudie Hammers, of Whiteville, officiating. Intement, with Military Honors followed in the Liberty Cemetery near Laconia. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-Main Chapel.


Mr. Robbins was born March 24, 1924 in Hardeman County, the son of the late Jesse Robbins and the late Emma Ellen Cannon Robbins. He was educated in the Hardeman County Public School system, and was the husband of Avis "Kate" Conner Robbins who died in 1988.


Mr. Robbins served in the United States Army during the World War II Period and was of the Baptist Faith. He was a lifelong resident of the Somerville and Whiteville areas and will be remembered as a kind, gentle person who enjoyed his family and many friends. He was employed by the Chickasaw Electric Cooperative in Somerville before his retirement in 1989 and since that time had enjoyed serving as groundskeeper for the Joyner's Muffler Shop in Whiteville.


Gardening was a favorite pastime and in earlier years, he found pleasure in bird hunting and coon hunting. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his community and family.


Survivors of Mr. Robbins include two daughters, Dale Wilkerson (Sam) of Whiteville and Alice Johnson (David, Sr.) of Whiteville; his son, Larry Robbins (Marie) of Bolivar; two sisters, Ruby Hardinger of Moyie Springs, ID and Mamie Lancaster of Plano, TX; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.


Those honored to serve as casketbearers included Brian K. Culver, Tim Culver, David Johnson, Jr., Brandon Wilkerson and Billy Wilson.
